  1. Used to + V1 vs Be/Get used to + V+ing — দেখতে একই, ব্যবহার সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা
  2. With a view to / Look forward to / Cannot help + V+ing — এই Phrase-গুলোর পরে সবসময় -ing
  3. Plural Nouns (Police, People, Cattle, Goods) + Plural Verb — দেখতে Singular, অর্থ Plural
  4. As well as / Along with / Together with — Verb প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী
  5. I wish / If → were — অবাস্তব কল্পনায় সব Subject-এর সাথে were

এই নিয়মগুলো SSC, HSC, Admission এবং Job পরীক্ষায় প্রায় প্রতি বছরই আসে। ToLearnTeam.com-এর এই ব্লগে সম্পূর্ণ বাংলায় শিখব Right Form of Verbs Part 6 — ৪০+ বাস্তব উদাহরণ, একটি সহজ Decision Chart, ৮টি Common Mistake এবং ৩টি Responsive SVG Infographic সহ।

চলুন শুরু করি!

Right Form of Verbs Part 6 — মূল ধারণা

পাঁচটি নিয়মের সংক্ষিপ্ত রোডম্যাপ

#StructureVerb Form
১Used toV1 (Base Form)
১Be/Get used toV+ing (Gerund)
২With a view to / Look forward to / Cannot helpV+ing (Gerund)
৩Police / People / Cattle / GoodsPlural Verb (are/were/have)
৪As well as / Along with / Together withFirst Subject অনুযায়ী
৫I wish / If (Unreal)were (সব Subject-এর সাথে)

কেন এই নিয়মগুলো ফাঁদ?

কারণ এখানে একই শব্দ দুই ভিন্ন Structure-এ দুই ভিন্ন Verb Form দাবি করে —

  • “used to” → V1
  • “be used to” → V+ing

আরও ফাঁদ হলো — “Police” দেখতে Singular, কিন্তু Plural Verb নেয়। এই ধরনের সূক্ষ্ম পার্থক্যগুলোই পরীক্ষায় নম্বর কাটায়।

Rule 1 — Used to vs Be/Get Used to

মূল নিয়ম

Rule A: Only “used to” → V1 (Base Form) — অতীতের অভ্যাস
Rule B: am/is/are/was/were/get + used to → V+ing (Gerund) — অভ্যস্ত হওয়া

কেন পার্থক্য? “Used to” (অতীতের অভ্যাস) একটি Modal-এর মতো কাজ করে। কিন্তু “Be/Get used to” (অভ্যস্ত) একটি Adjective + Preposition Structure — তাই Preposition “to”-এর পরে Gerund (V+ing) বসে।

১০+ বাস্তব উদাহরণ

Rule A — Used to + V1:

১. I used to play cricket in my childhood.
আমি শৈশবে ক্রিকেট খেলতাম।
→ play (V1)

২. He used to smoke heavily.
সে ভারী ধূমপান করত।
→ smoke (V1)

৩. She used to live in Dhaka.
সে ঢাকায় থাকত।
→ live (V1)

৪. We used to visit Cox’s Bazar every winter.
আমরা প্রতি শীতে কক্সবাজার যেতাম।
→ visit (V1)

৫. They used to walk to school.
তারা স্কুলে হেঁটে যেত।
→ walk (V1)

Rule B — Be/Get used to + V+ing:

৬. He is used to reading in the morning.
সে সকালে পড়ায় অভ্যস্ত।
→ reading (V+ing)

৭. She was used to working late hours.
সে দেরি পর্যন্ত কাজ করতে অভ্যস্ত ছিল।
→ working (V+ing)

৮. I am getting used to living in Dhaka.
আমি ঢাকায় থাকতে অভ্যস্ত হয়ে উঠছি।
→ living (V+ing)

৯. They are used to eating spicy food.

✅ সঠিক: I used to play cricket.

❌ ভুল: He is used to read in the morning.
✅ সঠিক: He is used to reading in the morning.

Rule 2 — With a View To / Look Forward To / Cannot Help + V+ing

মূল নিয়ম

এই Phrase-গুলোর পরে Verb-এর সাথে -ing যোগ হয় (Gerund):

  • with a view to (উদ্দেশ্যে)
  • look forward to (অপেক্ষা করা)
  • mind / would you mind (আপত্তি করা)
  • cannot help / could not help (না পেরে থাকা)
  • worth (যোগ্য)
  • no use / no good (কোনো লাভ নেই)

কারণ: এই সব Phrase-এ “to” হলো Preposition, Infinitive Marker নয় — তাই Preposition + V+ing (Gerund)।

১০+ বাস্তব উদাহরণ

১. I went there with a view to helping him.

→ meeting (V+ing)

১০. She works hard with a view to succeeding in life.
সে জীবনে সফল হওয়ার উদ্দেশ্যে পরিশ্রম করে।
→ succeeding (V+ing)

Real-world examples:

  • I look forward to seeing you soon.
  • I cannot help thinking about the past.
  • It is worth trying once more.

Common Mistakes

❌ ভুল: I am looking forward to receive your reply.
✅ সঠিক: I am looking forward to receiving your reply.

✅ সঠিক: I cannot help laughing.

Rule 3 — Plural Nouns + Plural Verb

মূল নিয়ম

কিছু Noun আছে যেগুলো Singular দেখতে, কিন্তু অর্থে Plural — এদের সাথে Plural Verb বসে:

  • Police, People, Cattle, Peasantry
  • Goods, Clothes, Trousers, Shoes
  • Wages, Riches, Alms, Thanks
  • Earnings, Savings, Belongings

মনে রাখার সূত্র: এদের সাথে সবসময় Plural Verb — are / were / have / do।

✅ সঠিক: People are waiting outside.

❌ ভুল: Cattle is grazing in the field.
✅ সঠিক: Cattle are grazing in the field.

Rule 4 — As Well As / Along With / Together With — First Subject Rule

মূল নিয়ম

যখন দুইটি Subject “as well as”, “along with”, “together with”, “with”, “accompanied by” — এই Phrase দিয়ে যুক্ত হয়, তখন Verb প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী নির্ধারিত হয় — দ্বিতীয় Subject-এর উপর নির্ভর করে না।

Formula:

Subject 1 + as well as / along with + Subject 2 → Verb = Subject 1 অনুযায়ী

গুরুত্বপূর্ণ: এই Phrase-গুলো “and”-এর মতো নয় — এরা Verb-কে Plural করে না।

৮+ বাস্তব উদাহরণ

রহিম, তার বন্ধুরাও — রহিম উপস্থিত।
→ Verb = is (First Subject “Rahim” Singular)

❌ ভুল: The teacher, along with the students, were present.
✅ সঠিক: The teacher, along with the students, was present.

Rule 5 — I Wish / If (Unreal) → were

মূল নিয়ম

Unreal Wish বা Hypothetical Statement-এ — অর্থাৎ “I wish” বা “If” দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া অবাস্তব কল্পনায় — be verb হিসেবে সব Subject-এর সাথে (এমনকি I, He, She-এর সাথেও) “were” বসে।

Formula:

I wish + Subject + were
If + Subject + were + …

কেন? কারণ এটি Subjunctive Mood — যা বাস্তব নয়, শুধু কল্পনা বোঝায়।
