ইংরেজি গ্রামারে Modal Verb-গুলো বাক্যের অর্থে বিশেষ প্রভাব ফেলে। Can এবং Could এই দুটি Modal Verb-এর ব্যবহার শিখলে আপনি Ability (সামর্থ্য), Permission (অনুমতি), Possibility (সম্ভাবনা), Request (অনুরোধ) ইত্যাদি ভাব খুব সহজেই প্রকাশ করতে পারবেন। এই ব্লগ পোস্টে আমরা Can ও Could-এর সঠিক ব্যবহার, গঠন, Tense ভেদে প্রয়োগ, Negative ও Wh-question, এবং প্রাসঙ্গিক Phrasal Verb ও শব্দার্থসহ ৫-১০টি করে উদাহরণ বিশ্লেষণ করব। শেষে থাকছে অনুশীলনী।
১. Can-এর ব্যবহার (Uses of Can)
Can বর্তমান ও ভবিষ্যৎ Ability, Permission, Possibility, Request, এবং Offer বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
গঠন (Structure):
- Affirmative: Subject + can + base verb + object.
- Negative: Subject + cannot/can’t + base verb + object.
- Yes/No Question: Can + subject + base verb + object?
- WH Question: WH word + can + subject + base verb + object?
১.১ Ability (সামর্থ্য)
কোনো কাজ করার শারীরিক বা মানসিক সক্ষমতা বোঝাতে।

Phrasal Verb / Expression: এখানে কোনো Phrasal Verb নেই।
Word Meaning: swim = সাঁতার কাটা, lift = তোলা, solve = সমাধান করা, delicious = সুস্বাদু।
১.২ Permission (অনুমতি)
অনানুষ্ঠানিক অনুমতি চাওয়া বা দেওয়া।

১.৩ Possibility (সম্ভাবনা)
কোনো ঘটনা ঘটার সাধারণ সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশে।

Phrasal Verb: “affect” – প্রভাব ফেলা (এটি Phrasal Verb নয়, সাধারণ Verb); “boost” – বাড়ানো।
Word Meaning: flood = বন্যা/প্লাবিত করা, lack = অভাব, skill = দক্ষতা, confidence = আত্মবিশ্বাস।
১.৪ Request (অনুরোধ)
বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ বা অনানুষ্ঠানিক অনুরোধ।

কাউকে সাহায্যের প্রস্তাব দেওয়া।

২. Could-এর ব্যবহার (Uses of Could)
Could অতীতের সামর্থ্য, ভদ্র অনুরোধ, দুর্বল সম্ভাবনা, পরামর্শ, এবং শর্তসাপেক্ষ বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
গঠন:
- Affirmative: Subject + could + base verb + object.
- Negative: Subject + could not/couldn’t + base verb + object.
- Question: Could + subject + base verb + object?
- WH Question: WH word + could + subject + base verb + object?

Can-এর তুলনায় Could অনেক বেশি ভদ্র ও নম্র শোনায়।

২.৩ Possibility (সম্ভাবনা – দুর্বল/অনিশ্চিত)
Can-এর চেয়ে কম নিশ্চিত সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করে।

অসম্ভাব্য বা কাল্পনিক পরিস্থিতিতে (Type 2 conditional-এ)।
