1. Tag Question কী? (What is a Tag Question?)

Tag question হলো একটি ছোট প্রশ্ন যা আমরা কোনো বক্তব্যের শেষে জুড়ে দিই, সাধারণত হ্যাঁ/না উত্তর আশা করে। বাংলায় আমরা বলি “তাই না?”, “তাই তো?”, “তাই না কি?”।

You are a student, aren’t you?	তুমি একজন ছাত্র, তাই না?
He doesn’t like coffee, does he?	সে কফি পছন্দ করে না, তাই তো?

They can swim, can’t they?	তারা সাঁতার জানতে পারে, তাই না?
She went home, didn’t she?	সে বাড়ি গিয়েছিল, তাই না?

Basic Rule (মৌলিক নিয়ম):

Positive statement (হ্যাঁ-বোধক বাক্য) → Negative tag (না-বোধক ট্যাগ)
Negative statement (না-বোধক বাক্য) → Positive tag (হ্যাঁ-বোধক ট্যাগ)

2. Tag Question-এর গঠন (Grammar Structure of Tag Questions)

Formula: Statement + comma (,) + auxiliary verb + n’t/not + subject pronoun?

Structure Breakdown:

মূল বাক্য থেকে auxiliary verb (helping verb) বের করো।
Auxiliary verb-টিকে ট্যাগ-এ বসাও। Positive হলে n’t যোগ করে negative করো; negative হলে positive করো।
Subject-এর pronoun (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) ব্যবহার করো।

Examples with Bangla Meaning:

We should go now	shouldn’t we?	We should go now, shouldn’t we?	আমাদের এখন যাওয়া উচিত, তাই না?
I am late	aren’t I?*	I am late, aren’t I?	আমি দেরি করেছি, তাই না?

Exception (ব্যতিক্রম): “I am” -এর tag হয় “aren’t I?” (I am not-এর সময় “am I?” হয়। যেমন: I am not late, am I?)

3. Different Types of Tag Questions (বিভিন্ন প্রকার ট্যাগ কোয়েশ্চেন)

3.1 With ‘be’ verb (am, is, are, was, were)

This is your book	isn’t it?	এটা তোমার বই, তাই না?
We are not late	are we?	আমরা দেরি করিনি, তাই তো?
She isn’t sick	is she?	সে অসুস্থ নয়, তাই তো?

3.2 With ‘do/does/did’ (Present and Past Simple)

মনে রাখবে: Present Simple-এ auxiliary verb না থাকলে tag-এর জন্য do/does ব্যবহার করবে। Past Simple-এ did।

He doesn’t know the answer	does he?	সে উত্তর জানে না, তাই তো?

3.3 With Modal Verbs (can, will, should, must, could, would)

She will come tomorrow	won’t she? (will not → won’t)	সে কাল আসবে, তাই না?
We should apologize	shouldn’t we?	আমাদের ক্ষমা চাওয়া উচিত, তাই না?
They must study	mustn’t they?	তাদের পড়তেই হবে, তাই না?
He can’t drive	can he?	সে গাড়ি চালাতে পারে না, তাই তো?
You won’t be late	will you?	তুমি দেরি করবে না, তাই তো?

3.4 With ‘have/has/had’ (Perfect Tenses and Possession)

She has a cat	doesn’t she? / hasn’t she?*	তার একটি বিড়াল আছে, তাই না?
They had gone before we arrived	hadn’t they?	আমাদের আসার আগেই তারা চলে গিয়েছিল, তাই না?
He hasn’t eaten yet	has he?	সে এখনো খায়নি, তাই তো?

Note: “have/has” যখন main verb (possess অর্থে), তখন tag-এ do/does বেশি প্রচলিত (informal): She has a pen, doesn’t she? তবে “hasn’t she?”-ও ব্রিটিশ ইংলিশে চলে।

3.5 Special Cases (বিশেষ ক্ষেত্র)

come up with মানে কোনো আইডিয়া, সমাধান বা পরিকল্পনা তৈরি করে নিয়ে আসা।
Examples:

She came up with a great idea. (সে একটা দারুণ আইডিয়া বের করল।)
Can you come up with a better plan? (তুমি কি আরও ভালো পরিকল্পনা করতে পারবে?)
They came up with a new rule, didn’t they? (তারা নতুন নিয়ম বের করেছে, তাই না?)

4. Short Responses (সংক্ষিপ্ত উত্তর)

Tag questions ছাড়াও conversation-এ Yes/No প্রশ্নের ছোট উত্তর দিতে হয়। Short response-এ auxiliary verb-এর পুনরাবৃত্তি হয়।

Structure: Yes/No + subject pronoun + auxiliary verb (not যোগে negative)।

Tag question-এর উত্তরও একইভাবে দিতে হয়:

You are a student, aren’t you? → Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
She doesn’t like fish, does she? → Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.

বাংলায় মনে রাখার কৌশল: “হ্যাঁ” বা “না”-এর পরে pronoun এবং auxiliary verb বললেই ছোট উত্তর সম্পূর্ণ।

5. Daily Life Examples (দৈনন্দিন জীবনে ২০টি ট্যাগ কোয়েশ্চেন ও ছোট উত্তর)

প্রতিটি উদাহরণে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শব্দের অর্থ প্রথম বন্ধনীতে দেওয়া আছে।

He hasn’t replied (উত্তর) yet, has he?	সে এখনো উত্তর দেয়নি, তাই তো?

6. Instructions to Make Your Own Tag Questions

(নিজে ট্যাগ কোয়েশ্চেন বানানোর নিয়ম)

Step-by-Step Formula:

Statement-টি positive নাকি negative তা দেখো।
- Positive → Negative tag
- Negative → Positive tag
Statement-এর auxiliary verb (am/is/are/was/were/do/does/did/have/has/had/can/will/should/must) খুঁজে বের করো।
- যদি auxiliary verb না থাকে, তবে Present Simple হলে do/does, Past Simple হলে did ধরো।
Auxiliary verb-টিকে tag-এ বসাও। Positive হলে এর সাথে n’t যোগ করে সংক্ষেপ করো (is not → isn’t; do not → don’t; will not → won’t; cannot → can’t; are not → aren’t; did not → didn’t; have not → haven’t ইত্যাদি)। Negative statement হলে auxiliary verb-টির positive রূপ বসাও।
Subject-এর pronoun (I, we, you, he, she, it, they) ট্যাগে বসাও।
- Everybody/Everyone → they
- Something/Nothing → it
- Let’s → we (tag: shall we?)
Comma দিয়ে tag যোগ করে প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন দাও।

Demo: “সে গান গাইতে পারে।” (Positive, auxiliary: can → negative tag: can’t she?)
→ She can sing, can’t she?

“তারা এখনো আসেনি।” (Negative, auxiliary: have → positive tag: have they?)

Hints:

পছন্দ করো = like; যায়নি = didn’t go; দেখতে পারি = can watch; আসবে = will come; বৃষ্টি = rain; লম্বা = tall; চলো = let’s; শেষ করেছে = have finished; চা খাবে না = won’t drink tea; খুশি = happy.

singer = গায়িকা; fish = মাছ; left = চলে গেছে; wrong = ভুল; easy = সহজ; exam = পরীক্ষা; ride = চালানো; abroad = বিদেশে; break = বিরতি; never calls = কখনো ফোন করে না।

8. Conclusion (উপসংহার)

আজ তুমি Tag Question এবং Short Response-এর দারুণ টেকনিক শিখে ফেলেছ। এখন থেকে তুমি ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার সময় “তাই না?” বলতে পারবে confidently। কঠিন কিছু না—শুধু auxiliary verb-এর নেগেটিভ-পজিটিভ নিয়মটা মাথায় রাখলেই হবে। প্রতিদিন ৫টি করে বাক্যে tag যোগ করে জোরে জোরে বলার অভ্যাস করো।
